Launchpad95 : Improved Novation Launchpad remote scripts

I am not much of a musician, nor do I know that much musical theory. The few musical skills I use these days are mostly self-taught. When I started discovering synthesizers, I got myself a table of the basic minor and major chords and their inversions. This helped me produce the first harmonies, just like someone learning the first chords on a guitar.

This document is supposed to give you that same kind of start. There are different possibilities to use the Launchpad Pro as a keyboard. As you know, a chromatic scale in Western music i. The Note Mode wraps these 12 notes around 5 columns, which gives you 40 notes — actually 43 — which is three and a half octaves. More on the padding in a minute. It is similar to the standard tuning of a guitar, where the first four strings are also tuned in fourths. The padding in each row is used to mirror the first three notes of the row above — meaning that 21 notes are doubled.

The padding gives you alternative ways to play some chords. The good news: The padding means that you have to learn only one chord pattern, and one variation, for major and minor chords, and for each of the two inversions. As soon as the lowest note of the chord reaches the right half of the Launchpad — what I call the Grip Change Zone — you use the variation.

This is an important point: use the same pattern all over the Launchpad, only shifted to the proper base note; only when the lowest note in the chord is in the right half of the Launchpad, you use the variation.

You only need one variation for each chord — and did it take time for me to realize that. The padding does allow for some extra chords and scales which the specialists may use — more waaay down. Major chord, 1st inversion. A seasoned dilettante like me knows best: the easiest way to impress non-musicians with your skills is improvising on pentatonics.

Five notes in an octave, and never a wrong one. If you ar comfortable with those patterns, it may be easier to use the additional mirrored keys from the pattern for a more organic way to play — diagram without any blue notes this time:. A PDF version of these graphics can be found here. Once you have learned each scale, chord, inversion, and its variant, things will start to become boring. Then, the padding allows for some additional variations to mess with your brain:. The User Mode layout has the huge advantage of being much more regular and repetitive : the note chromatic scale does not shift over the whole width of the pads but repeats itself every three rows, with the foundational C note always in the leftmost column.

This means that you have to learn only four sets of basic chord and scale patterns — one for each column. There is an even easier way — set the Launchpad Pro to a four-column layout with a repetitive padding of four.

To control the LEDs, you need to connect to this second port. Within Ableton, switching to this mode lets you control your currently playing tracks and navigate the interface. More importantly, when the controller is in this mode Ableton is put in control of the LEDs underneath the drum pads. The LEDs are numbered sequentially from left to right.

C6 becomes C7. Or use the decimal numbers. The Launchkey Mini has a limited color palette. Colors increase in red brightness from left to right, and increase in green brightness from top to bottom. For any given color, add 1 to increase the red value and add 16 to increase the green value up to a max of 3x per component.

For completeness, here is the full palette of available colors. You can see that colors are grouped in fours and then repeated four times, and the entire palette of 64 is duplicated twice. Watch video Tech specs.Launchpad has bi-directional communication with Ableton Live, meaning the pad can trigger actions in the software, but also receive LED feedback.

Launchpad is first and foremost a music controller, and light shows were never a key consideration during its design. One limitation of the MIDI protocol is that there are only levels of velocity 0—and therefore there are only colours to choose from on the Launchpad Pro and MkII.

You will want to neaten up your flashes, to make sure they turn on and off exactly in sync. This is cool, and can add a dynamic animated element to your pre-arranged performances. You can design custom animations for each Launchpad button, by limiting the range of the Chain to single notes.

As light show genius Kaskobi explains in the above video, you can use MIDI effects and note-range limiting to design intricate LED actions for each button push. By using the velocity plugin on the MIDI channel that your Launchpad is controlling, you can lock the LED of the pad to display a single colour - it will illuminate the same colour every time you play that pad.

Add the pitch effect to the chain and move the pitch dial around to where you want the light to be moved to. This can be used to control the length of time an LED is lit for. You can use it to elongate the length of a simple button tap, and also create uniformity in button presses. You can adjust note length from 10ms to 60s. In music, this makes a musical chord from one root note. In Light show world, it means multiple LEDs illuminated from a single button push. The Arpeggiator is used for any light effects that move, and it works by moving one light in steps.

To add multiple lights, you can use a chord too in the same Chain. The arpeggiator has five main controls: Repeat, which tells the arpeggiator how many times to repeat the same action; Rate, which controls how often the light steps occur in one repetition; Gate, which controls the time each light in the arpeggiator stays lit for; Steps, which controls the amount of position changes in one repetition; and Distance, which controls how far each light step moves. This means that all buttons on the Launchpad will trigger the same chain of effects, unless you limit that range.

To do this, drag the edges of the green bar the range bar to cover only the desired note, or notes. Now, you can create a custom behaviour for each note. Light show heaven! You can also make new MIDI tracks with the same input and output settings, and use them to group together certain types of effects, so you can recall, edit and update them quickly. Hopefully, this will give you what you need to make your own light show.
